What's New at Kyoto NHK ESS?

京都ESSの皆様

先日21日の金環日食は皆様ご覧になりましたでしょうか。前日まで天気は曇りと予測されていましたが、ちょうど日食が観測できる時間帯には広範囲で天候に恵まれ、京都市内でも世紀の天体ショーを観察することが出来ましたね。我々ESSメンバーの中には、日食眼鏡をカメラのレンズにはめて日食を撮影された方もいらっしゃいました。ほんとに美しいリングが鮮明に映し出されていて、あの一瞬の感動が蘇りました。

さて、そんな5月も残すところあと数日となりましたね。今月のニュースレターを配信いたします。

≪TOPICS≫

ある外国人ライターが書いた日本人に対する記事を見たことがあります。「感謝の気持ちを言葉以上に、態度と礼儀正しさで示すのが日本人だ」と記されていました。確かに私たち日本人は欧米人のように感謝の意や、好きという感情を言葉で伝えることをあまり習慣としない国民性があります。正直なところ自分と相手が近い関係であればある程、率直に言葉で伝えることを照れ臭く感じるところがあります。日頃なかなか伝えず仕舞いになっている大切な人…皆様の心に思い当たる人は居ますか。

その中にご両親の顔が浮かんだ方、ちょうど良いタイミングです！感謝の気持ちを伝えると言っても、やはり何かの切掛けが無いと「急にどうしたの？」なんて言われかねません。大丈夫です、6月はご存知の通り父の日があります。今までの感謝の気持ちを込めて、何かプレゼントをしたりゆっくり話す機会を設けられたりしてはいかがでしょうか。

しかし5月の母の日に何もされていらっしゃらない方、父の日だけ特別扱いではお母さんが可哀そうですね。女性は特別扱いが特に大好きですから、お父さんだけ…なんてやきもちを焼かれちゃいます。そこでちょうど今の時期は両日の中間日ですので「上手い嘘」をついて（5月26日のプラクティスで学びました！）、ご両親への感謝の日を創られて実行されてはいかがかと思います。

感謝をするということはその相手は勿論のこと、自分自身の心も暖かく満たされた気持ちにさせてくれます。そしてその話を聞いた人、その場に居合わせた人など第三者もまた暖かい気持ちになれる嬉しい波紋が広がります。

「感謝」　－　ありがたく感じて、謝意を表すこと。

自分自身の心を豊かにすることが出来たら、感謝するべき対象は毎日次々に挙がることと思います。まず身近なところで、私たち京都ESSが感謝するべきことは勿論会場となる場所を毎週快くご提供くださっているお寺のご住職様。これは活動の始めに合掌をすることと規律をしっかり厳守することで、感謝の意を伝えることに繋がっていると考えております。更には、英語を共に勉強するために集まる京都ESSメンバーの皆さん一人ひとりです。自分独りの学習では伸びえない英語力や知識を提供してもらっていることへの感謝。これは謙虚に学ぶ姿勢と同時に、自分が持ち得る知識を他のメンバーに教えるということで謝意を表すことができるのではないでしょうか。
相手や場所に応じて適切な方法で感謝を表現できることができ、そしてその言葉以上の謝意を真摯に受け止めることが出来る日本人。まさに私たちに根付いた誇るべきDNAだと感じます。

さて、6月からも感謝の気持ちを忘れずに、豊満な気持ちで英語の勉強に励みませんか。

Genre: writing & talk
Title: personal letter
Description

(1) make some groups

(2) write a letter
1. to: ex.) acquaintance lives overseas, english teacher,
family, friend and so on

2. letter: write things you would like to communicate
ex.) failure story, amusing story and so on

3. situation: explain the situation so that members in your
group can understand

(3) make a presentation in your group and talk
(start by 6:10 at the latest)

No doubt you write an e-mail instead of a letter and
you don't have much time every day.
So this is just a practice. I hope you enjoy it.

We can talk anything as far as it is on the subject of our ESS

New members tell the impression on the first day. Has it changed now ?

They are planning to visit Kyoto and also other prefectures. They are waiting your advice. Please check their desires and make a week travel plans for them.

1:Describe a word in English and other members guess what the word is.
2:Listen to a description of a word from an English-English dictionary, and guess the word.

I hope everyone will enjoy speaking, listening to English to play games.
