先日、英国の国際文化機関ブリティシュ・カウンシルから送られていた報告書によると私達にとって
大切な10の外国語に日本語が選ばれたようです。順位をみてみると1位スペイン語、以下アラビア語、仏
語、中国語、独語、ポルトガル語、伊語、露語、トルコ語と続いて日本語が辛うじて10位であります。
しかし、本報告書の日本語の大切さを説いた部分では、文化的側面よりビジネス的側面がクローズアップ
されているようです。「和食」が世界文化遺産に認定されたのを機に日本の文化を通じて日本語の美しさ、
表現の豊かさを
世界に発信していければいいですね。

＜Topics ―名演説の中での名台詞についてー＞
１１月２日のESSの合宿の一日目に催されたスピーチコンテストには8名の会員の方がスピーカーとして参加して頂きました。
どのスピーチも熱い主張が私達オーディエンスにもひしひし伝わってきました。
とくに、MVP（Most Valuable Player）を獲得された野口さんは英語落語を披露して頂き観客を笑いの渦へ誘って頂きました。
また、MIP(Most Impressive Player)を獲得された酒井さんはご自身の主張を比較的簡易の表現で理路整然に話されたのが印象的でした。
今日に至るまで世界の著名人が名演説の中での名台詞をいくつか紹介したいと思います。
まずは、フランスの国民的英雄であるナポレオン・ボナパルト氏がフランス軍を鼓舞するために捧げた演説から一部抜粋します。
Soldiers, your country is justified in expecting great things of you. Will you fulfill its hopes? The greatest obstacles
undoubtedly have been overcome, but you have still battles to fight, cities to take, rivers to cross.
Is there anyone among you whose courage is slackening? Is there anyone would prefer to return across the summits of the Apennies
and Alps and bear patiently the insults of a slavish soldiery? No, there is none such among the conquerors of Montenotte, of Dego,
of Mondovi. All of you are burning to extend the glory of the French people.
兵士たちよ、祖国が諸君らから偉大なものを期待するのは正当なことなのだ。その願いを満たしてくれないか？最大の障害を乗り越えたことに
疑問の余地はないが、それでも戦うべきいくさ、征服すべき都市、渡るべき河が残されている。諸君らの中には士気が弱まっている者はるか？
アペニンとアルプスを越えて戻り、卑怯な兵士という汚名に耐えたいと思う者はあるか？いいや、モンテノッテ、デゴ、モンドヴィを征服した者たち
の中にそんな者はいないはずだ。諸君らの心がすべて、フランス国民の栄光を拡大する気持ちで燃え立っているだろう。
次にみなさんよくご存じのエイブラハム・リンカーン大統領のゲディスバーグ演説から一部を抜粋します。
It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far nobly advanced.
It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from honored dead we take increased devotion to
that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-
that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall
not perish from the earth.
ここで戦った人々が気高く推し進めてきた未完の作業に献身することが、むしろ生きるわれわれの務めなのです。
目の前に残る大仕事に献身することが、私達の務めなのです。名誉の死を遂げた人々が最後まで全身全霊で身を捧げた大義のために、
私達もさらに尽くしていくこと、戦死者の死を無駄にはしないとここで固く決意すること。神のご加護の下でこの国の自由を新生させること、
そして人民の人民による人民ための政治を地上から絶やさぬようにすることなのです。
次に耳と目と口が不自由だったヘレンケラー女史の米国聴覚障害者言語指導促進協会での演説の一部を紹介します。
So, I want to say to those who are trying to learn to speak and those who are teaching them: Be of good cheer.
Do not think of today`s failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourselves a difficult task,
but you will succeed if you persevere, and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles-a delight in climbing rugged paths,
which you would perhaps never know if you did not sometimes slip backward-if the road was always smooth and pleasant.
Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost. Sometime, somewhere, somehow we shall
find that which we seek. We shall speak, yes, and sing, too, as God intended we would speak and sing.
ですから、話せるようになるために努力している方や、そういった方の指導をされている方々に、こう申し上げたいのです。
楽観的になりましょう。今日の失敗ではなく、明日やってくるかもしれない成功に思いを馳せましょう。皆さんは自らに試練を
課したわけですが、辛抱すれば成功しますし、障害を乗り越える喜びを見出せるでしょう。それは険しい坂道を登ることで
得られる喜びであり、平坦で快適な道を時折滑り落ちることもないまま歩き続けた場合には、決して経験することができない喜びです。
忘れないで下さい、素晴らしいものを目指す努力が無駄になることはないということを。いつか、どこか、なんとかして、私達は求めるもの
を見つけ出すのです。神が意図されたように話し、そうです、歌うようにもなっていくのです。
次に非暴力主義を旗印にアメリカの人種差別の撤廃と各人種の協和を訴えてたマーティン・ルーサー・キング牧師のワシントン大行進演説を抜粋します。
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners
will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice,
sweltering with heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin
but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today!
私には夢があります、いつかこの国が立ちあがり、「われわれは人間がすべて生まれながらにして平等であるということを
自明のものと考える」という、その信条の真の意味を実現するという夢が。
私には夢があります、いつかジョージアの赤土の丘でかって奴隷だった人の息子と奴隷所有者だった人の息子が兄弟愛
という名のテーブルに肩を並べて座る夢が。
私には夢があります。不正と抑圧という灼熱地獄と化しているミシシッピーのような州でさせも、いつか自由と正義の
オアシスに変貌を遂げるという夢が。
私には夢があります、いつか私の４人の幼い子供たちが、皮膚の色ではなく人格によって判断される国に暮らすという夢が。
今、私には夢があるのです！
いかがだったでしょうか？どのスピーチも私達の諦めて掛けていた気持ちもう一度前進できるように勇気づけるものだったのではないでしょうか？
最後に１２月５日に惜しまれながらも亡くなった南アフリカ共和国のマンデラ元大統領の1994年の
大統領就任演説を紹介します。
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are not to be?
You are child of God.
You playing small doesn`t serve the world.
There`s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won`t feel insecure around you.
We were all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It`s not just in some of us.
It`s in everyone!
And we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others!
私達のもっとも恐れていることは、
自分の力のなさではありません。
私達がもっと恐れているのは、私達の中の闇ではなく、私達の光なのです。
私達は自問自答します。
「自分が、卓越して優れ、魅力に溢れ、才能があり、素晴らしいなんてことあるだろうか？」と。
でも、そうでないあなたとは、一体何者なのでしょうか？

周りの人が不安がらないように縮こまっていることは、
